Łukasz Sznajder earned a combined B.Eng. and M.Sc. in Biotechnology from the University of Life Sciences in Poznań, Poland, in 2010. He conducted his master’s research on microRNA misprocessing in Huntington’s disease, caused by a CAG short tandem repeat expansion in the HTT gene, in the lab of Włodzimierz Krzyżosiak at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences.
He then pursued doctoral studies on the molecular genetics of myotonic dystrophy type 1, a disease caused by a CTG repeat expansion in the DMPK gene, in the lab of Krzysztof Sobczak at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland. During his Ph.D. training, Łukasz was awarded fellowships from the Foundation for Polish Science and the National Science Centre, earning his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology in 2015.
In 2016, he joined the lab of Maurice Swanson at the Center for NeuroGenetics, University of Florida College of Medicine, where he investigated the disease biology of multiple tandem repeat expansion disorders. His work focused particularly on myotonic dystrophy type 2, caused by a CCTG expansion in the CNBP gene, and C9orf72-associated amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/frontotemporal dementia (ALS/FTD), driven by a GGGGCC repeat expansion. During his postdoctoral training, Łukasz received both a Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation Fellowship and a Muscular Dystrophy Association Development Grant.
In 2021, he was appointed Research Assistant Professor at the University of Florida, where he began developing his research program focused on neuropsychiatric disorders caused by repeat expansions. In 2023, he joined the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, as an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, where he continues to advance his research. So far, his work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation.
